The Jones Relationship
Jeremiah Linde Jones
was my GG Grandfather. He was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1791 and although there
is very little information prior to this time, the family was an ancient one
from Brecknockshire, Wales, before going over to Ireland and had been there a
generation before J.L. was born. They weren't exactly poor as there was a Dublin
jewellers shop and one of the family was a silver artificer whose work is now
much sought after by collectors.
J.L. had
several brothers and sisters and there is a copy of a letter [mostly unreadable]
from a brother E.H.Jones. He called J.L. "Jerry" and it was written in
Dublin, April 19, 1835. There is also a drawing of the family's arms on it, the
shield being an 18th century shape so it would have been brought with them.

He left home at the age of 12 and
joined the Royal Navy at 14 rising to the position of Purser/Paymaster. At 17 he married and had 3 boys and 3 girls by this
marriage. He was widowed in 1831 and remarried. After he was widowed a 2nd time he married my GG Grandmother Eleanor Charlotte Orme in 1836 in
Calcutta India. As yet I have still to verify the marriage details of the
1st two wives. One source gives his 1st wife as Miss J. S. Orme, the other gives
his 1st wife as Miss C. Green.
There were no children to the 2nd
marriage and 7 to the 3rd. The 1st born, Richard Beresford, was born in England
and the other 6 in Australia.
In 1838 he immigrated to NSW,
Australia where he was reported to have been offered a grant of land of 2000
acres at Woolloomooloo which he declined. However he was given a grant of land
and although I have yet to find the location and size of the holding I believe
it was approximately 40 minutes drive from Griffith, NSW.
Sometime between 1847 and 1856 he
went to the Crimean War where he received a medal which it's said was pinned on him by
Queen Victoria herself.
